Ongoing WDHD Campaigns

The World Digestive Health Day 2010 Campaign Leader Dr. Charles Bernstein comments on WGO’s goals for WDHD 2010:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. The two main types of IBD are Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease. IBD affects young people and its peak age of onset is typically the third decade, during a time while young adults are finishing their education, starting a family, or building a career. Some patients suffer from progressive courses while for others the course is more waxing and waning. Hospitalization and surgery are often necessary and can greatly impact on quality of life. However, with individually tailored medical and surgical therapy patients with IBD can lead full and productive lives and many can have their disease in long lasting remission. While IBD was predominately a disease of developed countries from the middle of the twentieth century, in recent years there have been rising incidence rates in developing countries. During 2010 WGO wishes to underscore the emergence and complexities of IBD to doctors in developed and developing countries. Our focus is on optimizing diagnostic approaches and maximizing patient care to enhance the quality of life of IBD patients and to help inform their health care providers worldwide.
